The Atlas Human-Powered Helicopter was designed and constructed by the University of Toronto AeroVelo’s alumni team and on June 13th 2013 it sustained sufficient altitude of 3.3 metres remaining aloft for 64.1 seconds to become the world’s first successful human-powered helicopter taking the long standing AHS Igor I. Sikorsky Human Powered Helicopter Competition. Originally started in 1980 more than twenty designs have been submitted over the years but only have a handful have succeeded getting off the ground for a few seconds. Bringing together some of the same talent that worked on the Snowbird human-powered ornithopter, they hope to build upon these successes and next plan to work on human-powered land vehicles capable of attaining highway speeds.
